History
of the OrdeR

The Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem traces its roots to the ancient tradition of hospitaller care – according to tradition, its origins go back to Jerusalem, where a hospital for lepers existed outside the city walls.
After the time of the Crusades and European expansion, the Order gradually transformed – from a military brotherhood into a community dedicated to charitable care.
Today, the Order is ecumenical, open to all Christian traditions, and for approximately 300 years it has not been under papal authority – it operates as an independent, international institution with its own statutes. The Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem functions internationally – it is now active in more than 40 countries across 5 continents (Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas, Oceania).
The Order continues in the spirit of its history – providing support to the sick, caring for those in need, and connecting the values of ancient knights with a modern humanitarian mission.
